Mitigation of petroleum-hydrocarbon-contaminated hazardous soils using organic amendments: A review

نویسندگان

چکیده

The term “Total petroleum hydrocarbons” (TPH) is used to describe a complex mixture of petroleum-based hydrocarbons primarily derived from crude oil. Those compounds are considered as persistent organic pollutants in the terrestrial environment. A wide array amendments increasingly for remediation TPH-contaminated soils. Organic not only supply source carbon and nutrients but also add exogenous beneficial microorganisms enhance TPH degradation rate, thereby improving soil health. Two fundamental approaches can be contemplated within context soils using amendments: (i) enhanced sorption matter (immobilization) it reduces bioavailability contaminants, (ii) increasing solubility contaminants by supplying desorbing agents (mobilization) enhancing subsequent biodegradation. Net immobilization mobilization have both been observed following application contaminated This review examines mechanisms discusses influencing factors relation sequestration, bioavailability, biodegradation uncertainty various processes remains critical area future research.

Reducing Heavy Metals Extraction from Contaminated Soils Using Organic and Inorganic Amendments – a Review

Recently problems relating to environmental pollution and the need to protect and preserve the environment from further deterioration has drawn increasing research attention. The goal of any remediation based on soil amendments is to achieve maximum reduction in the bioavailability of heavy metals by immobilization in soils. Modern remediation approaches increasingly focus on in situ environmen...

Persulfate Oxidation for the Remediation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Soils

The feasibility of total petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated (TPH) soil remediation was studied using persulfate oxidation. Factors tested included type of activator, persulfate concentration, number of persulfate applications, and reaction time. Probe chemicals were used to study effi ciency of the persulfate oxidation mechanism. The best activation method used Fe2+, which achieved 40.8% TPH de...

Investigation of Hydrocarbon-degrading Microbial Communities of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils in Harghita County, Romania

Microorganisms able to degrade hydrocarbon pollutants (gasoline, and other petroleum derivatives) have been isolated from two contaminated areas (Sândominic and Bălan) by enrichment technique. The hydrocarbon degradative capacity of contaminated sites were determined using “Biometer flasks” (respiratory CO2 production measurement). Total counts and hydrocarbon degrading counts were determined u...

Stimulation of hybrid poplar growth in petroleum-contaminated soils through oxygen addition and soil nutrient amendments.

Hybrid poplar trees (Populus deltoides x nigra DN34) were grown in a green-house using hydrocarbon-contaminated soil from a phytoremediation demonstration site in Health, Ohio. Two independent experiments investigated the effect of nutrient addition on poplar growth and the importance of oxygen addition to root development and plant growth. Biomass measurements, poplar height, and leaf color we...
